FIRE SUPPRESSION

Overview

Fire Suppression: The primary role of the Fire Department is to put out fires. Over 30 members on the Lannon Fire Department who are trained to the State of Wisconsin's specifications of FireFighter I as a minimum. The majority of these firefighters have gone beyond this to the level of FireFighter II. The majority of the Lannon Fire Department's firefighters have also been trained as Motor Pump Operators, whom are the firefighters who can drive and operate the fire engines that are used on a daily basis.

An Automatic Mutual Aid agreement with the Menomonee Falls Fire Department has them automatically sent to any structure fires inside of the Village of Lannon at the same time as initial alarm is sounded. This provides an additional 2 fire stations worth of equipment and personnel on the way to the scene immediately.

Additional mutual aid agreements are in place with the Villages of Germantown and Sussex, along with the Towns of Lisbon and Richfield. The Village of Lannon is now a part of MABAS division 106, and this will allow a more streamlined process of requesting mutual aid from additional communities

Response Times: The Lannon Fire Department is a volunteer department in suburban area with a population density of approximately 500 people per square mile. The recommended response time from the NFPA for this type of setting is to have 10 firefighters on the scene within 10 minutes in 80% of the occurrences. The adjoining areas of Menomonee Falls has a population density of just under 1000 people per square mile and the same response time and staffing recommendations applies there as well.

The Lannon Fire Department is able to have the appropriate apparatus en route to the emergency scene within 5 minutes greater than 90% of the time, and the entire primary response area of the department is all within a 6 minute drive of the fire station at the posted speed limits. All incidents that the department responds to are reported to the NFIRS database promptly. In the past decade, there has only been one structure inside of the Village of Lannon.

ISO Rating: The Village of Lannon has had a rating of 6 for all areas for many years. The latest testing of this was early in 2007 and we have maintained the rating of 6. This rating is actually the best that an area without fire hydrants can receive.

State Highway 74; which is Main Street as it passes through Lannon, is being completely replaced in the year 2008. The Village of Lannon has created a water utility and will have water mains along with fire hydrants installed along Main Street from end to end at this time. After this is project is completed, the Village of Lannon will be eligible to have their ISO Rating rechecked at which time the rating can be lowered which in turn may lower the premiums for property insurance within the village

Equipment Used

Heavy Rescue 2576 is dispatched to all calls received by the Lannon Fire Department. As the name implies, 2576 carries equipment for the various rescue situations that may be encounterd- vehicular extrication, ice rescue, cold-water rescue, and high angle (rope) rescue for starters. This vehicle is dispatched to EMS calls as well to provide additional manpower as needed for the situation.

Engines 2561 and 2562 both have onboard water capacities of 1000 gallons, and the fire pumps on these 2 pumpers are capable of flowing in excess of 1000 gallons per minute. The Lannon Fire Department currently has 18 Motor/Pumper Operators (MPOs) to drive and operate these vehicles.

Water Supply: The primary area covered but the Lannon Fire Department has no fire hydrants. The Lannon Fire Department uses a Water Tender ; #2591, which has the capacity to transport 3000 gallons of water to supplement the fire engines. Additional departments are called for structural fires to add on to this. Through the use of a drop tank, the water tenders from the Lannon Fire Department and from our mutual aid partners can empty their contents and begin the trip to refill themselves.

Grass Fires: The Lannon Fire Department purchased a Polaris Ranger 6x6 and has had custom modifications applied to this vehicle to set this vehicle up for grass fires. The original plastic bed was removed and replaced with a diamond plate flatbed, cabinets were installed on both sides of the bed, a pump and water tank were placed in-between. Besides the conversion for the fire service, a framework was installed to transport a Stokes Rescue basket over this assembly. This will allow the Lannon Fire Department to rescue people that are not in areas reachable by a conventional ambulance
